Suffolk Young Carers Code of Practice

Code of Practice working in Thurleston High School

Parents are informed via the school magazine and newsletter of our work in the school.

An assembly is delivered to Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 which aims to raise awareness of young carers’ issues and support available.

Suffolk Young Carers will deliver PSHE lessons to Year 7 on Young Carers issues and support available. At the end of the PSHE lesson pupils will be asked to complete a questionnaire which is returned to the Young Carers Worker. This form will also include a section where they can request to meet with a Young Carers Worker.

A pupil can see the Young Carers Worker for an informal chat immediately after the PSHE lesson in room …..

They can bring a friend with them. There will be two Young Carers Workers present. The Young Carers Worker will give information on the service offered by Suffolk Young Carers and, if appropriate, how to make a referral to our project and the support available inside and outside school for young carers.

The Young Carers Worker will inform the Named Young Carers Contact of any pupil who has asked for an appointment to see a Young Carers Worker.

We will explain to all young people who contact the Project that we will treat information given to us as confidential. We will explain to every young person that if we become aware of any child protection issues, such as the risk of significant harm to a child/young person, we will have to inform the appropriate services.

We aim to facilitate better communication between Young Carers, their families and teaching staff. We believe that Young Carers and their families are best supported through effective communication between the family and agencies involved. We encourage Young Carers to give us permission to pass information on to relevant staff.

Sometimes Young Carers may request that their parents are not told that they have contacted us. In these cases, and with the school’s permission, we are able to meet young people at school without in-forming their parents. However, we would attempt to build up trust with that young person and to encourage them to tell their parents that we have met with them.

We will not meet a young person outside school, or provide trips, activities or club membership without a formal referral and parental consent.
